The one I heard at Owston sounded great.

Thanks Paul, I'd hope you would find them sounding even better now. :)

The Solen MPK cathode coupling caps for the GK-71 have been delivered. If I can find the strength to lift the units onto the workbench then I will fit them today.

I've got one of those 3 week colds at the moment and I'm (literally) full of snot.

Might even have to cancel the motocross riding on Sunday. :( :(

They just hang on for months this winter don't they.

I just came through a very congested one. I found it turned the corner about a week ago when I picked my right nostril and on the end of the bogey came a long string of egg white about 10"s all intact and still attached to the bogey. I literally felt like my whole face on the right side was set free. I breathed easily for the first time since autumn.

Now I am feeling better than I have since winter began. Managed to continue doing my 12 hr days with just Sunday off all the way though.

Pls write to the queen and recommend me for an honour?
Obviously no hope whatsoever of returning to this hobby in a practical way, but if I don't keel over first, one day I shall.

Enjoying you guys efforts vicariously instead.

Never heard anything like that before Paul.

I'm thinking of trying a polywhotsit coupling cap between the driver valve and GK-71 grid.

There are lots of different types to try, some not that expensive even from HFS.

These caught my eye on Ebay. Worth a punt ?

They're just OK metallised film caps.
For a bit more money, these are A LOT better , hard to beat at any price, in my opinion :

Pretty good but metallised again, so less tone in the bass and mids. I have used them ( the previous white ones by Audyn - same thing inside ) on the Ariel speakers , they are one of the best metallised ones.
So, why do you need more than 630V here ? - wouldn't the 12GN7 be sorely stressed at more than about 500V on the anode ?

Blimey, if HFC get any quicker with sending out orders I'll get them before I order them. :D

The cold has abated, yesterday I was racing the bike so I'm a bit stiff this morning.

I've fitted the M-cap ZN coupling caps, and now playing Eva (Songbird) to test. I can notice a difference straight away, not top end so much, but things like guitar seem a tad more prominent and clearer. Bass guitar seems easier to follow, but without intruding into the mix.

I'd never been a fan of "so called" boutique parts, but these are the icing on the cake. :D

These amps have undergone quite a transformation recently, and with the dual mono PSU, Andrews filament boards and a sprinkling of "goodies" changed them from merely "good" to truly excellent.

Time for a Philfest ?

I've moved onto classical music now, a bit of Schubert.

Still can notice the lower/mid improvements. :D

Now the GK-71 is at this (high) standard I suppose it means the 833a rebuild will have to be started.
