Re: C3g Aikido Phono

Yes, that RIAA will scale, the trick is choosing standard values, which is what that one does. I did say it was a 'nominal' 5k6 as the pentode load confirms, but as Nick says, it will be lower at high frequency as the caps will be a 'short'. PS apologies for stating the obvious but caps get smaller ...

Re: C3g Aikido Phono

It is a nominal 5k6, if memory serves, it was done in Spice, but the values will scale up, or down, according to requirements.

We did, at the time, think low Z had other advantages, so it was about striking a balance, but that's where my memory goes hazy.

Re: C3g Aikido Phono

I would also consider the Mundorf ZN ones. Exactly what load is that c3g going to be driving, it looks a bit harsh over 10kHz (<1k I would guess). Did you ever do a THD against frequency sweep for it? It was quite low Z RIAA, Nick, if I recall. It was designed in the days when I was working my way ...

Re: My Swansong speaker build

Is everything symmetrical in the room? Shape, speaker position etc. If so, it’s likely to be on both speakers and difficult to fix My room is very asymmetrical and I have a 70Hz notch on the left speaker only (bay window), so I have boosted the right speaker - I couldn’t put enough power in the lef...

Re: My Swansong speaker build

Perhaps you're right, but I don't think it got a fair evaluation. Maybe, I got the sense that it was wanting the LF level pushing up to far trying to get the energy that was being lost in the notch and that was making the collision with the mid range worst. That's why I suggested taking that notch ...

Re: My Swansong speaker build

I definitely think it would be worth measuring these speakers again, Chris. Blocking up the chimney opening in Colin's room made a very audible difference with these speakers, I would love to see more science on what exactly the new in room response looks like with that rather large 'room port' remo...

Re: Linn AC Motor

Thanks for the offer Philip, (and Nick), I'll see how far I get with repairing the supply and keeping the deck 'original'.

Re: My Swansong speaker build

Sounds like a fitting swansong build, Colin.

I am certainly looking forward to hearing them when I get the chance.

Re: Linn AC Motor

Thanks all,

I must admit to being slightly surprised the caps measured ok, they were my first thought. I'll do the caps and the main dropper resistor and see if it behaves itself on the bench, to be honest, I don't fancy having to remove that pulley!

Linn AC Motor

My lad has a Linn Basik and it's motor seems to be erratic at best, sometimes it starts running, sometimes not. I have taken the simple PSU apart and there's clear signs of heat damage on the voltage dropper Linn use to reduce the voltage to the motor and hence lower vibration. I'll change that for ...

I had the privilege of seeing these 'in the flesh' last weekend, the photos don't do them justice. Looking forward to hearing them :)

A great day on Saturday, once again thanks to Steve for organizing :)

The general standard of the kit gets better with every passing year!
