Hi Dave, I can chip in assuming Colin doesn't mind? They are two smaller ports. Why? Colin wanted to gradually increase the size of the port and he couldn't get the desired sizes as gradual increments; this was the best compromise and also the most cost effective experimental method. I would imagin...

Lundahl seem to me to get very highly rated in some other forums/fora? and Sowter much more of an indifferent reception but they are surely equally valid choices? I'll probably go with the latter, just because. Any advantage to potted, other than looking very nice?! I think there is a difference in ...

does anyone have any experience of any of these, particularly the Sowter, and where does that law of diminishing returns kick in Hard to answer that, it kicks in the moment you build a valve amp, it just depends on how important the improvements are to you. But I havent used any of the mentioned tr...

Hi Nick, thanks for the reply. Where did you find those values from? Would they Have just be on a data sheet for the valves? it makes a little more sense to me now you explained it. Thanks. http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/frank/sheets/010/p/PCC88.pdf from the above gm = 12.8 ma/v mu = 33 And for...

R12=(rp+2Rload) / mu Its not as bad as it looks, rp is the valves anode resistance (dynamic) and mu (or µ) is the gain of the valve. I would assume RLoad is the headphone resistance. So if you had (for example 300 ohm headphones and using 6dj8, rp = 2750, mu = 33) R12 = (2750+600)/33 So, R12 = 101 ...

Well, in that case I would look at the curves for the valve and draw the load line. This is where the Dave thread comes in.

I would work backwards. In respect to power supply hum, start with what S/N ratio and absolute noise floor you want at a point in the circuit. Then use the input signal level, the gain, and the PSRR of the stage to calculate the maximum level of power supply ripple you can entertain. Then given the ...

I suspect they have a almost infinite amount of Michael that could be extracted.

How can you draw an analogy with digital? Analogy's analogue, innit?
True, but Analogue is only a analogue of reality, and reality is quantised when it comes down to it after all :-)

And so cheap! I've been wondering what to do with my banker's bonus. Just proves Arthur C. Clarkes third law : Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. This is possibly the best yet This one got me. http://www.lessloss.com/blackbody-p-200.html If we could find a way of converting bullshit to energy that web page could power the north of England. I particularly love the line "Another analogy may be drawn to the fine art of noise shaping in digi...
