Re: Yorkshire Hi-Fi Club

Providing I'm not stuck at an archive in London, I'll (finally) be able to make one of these. Sounds like it'll be a good day.

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Too right. I'd also buy from elsewhere rather than giving them business.

Re: Fane 15" full range speaker

For what it's worth, it was Thiele who was largely responsible for popularising golden ratio for speaker cabinets back in the early - mid '70s. Nominally it spreads the eigenmodes / reduces their build-up. It's not the only option of course, pretty much any irrational number basis can be used as an ...

Re: David Wilson

Yes, some were IIRC (I've not slept for 4 nights, heading to bed in a minute). They have vented too, depending on the model. David was very canny at manipulating responses to produce a particular sound; whether you like it or not he knew what he was doing. They've use[d] a few Scan based units, espe...

David Wilson

David Wilson finally passed away a few days back. Like Wilson Audio or no (I don't, but if you get beyond the cliches there are aspects of his approach that are worth noting), & whatever you think about the pricing, he was a major figure, quite a nice person by most accounts, and a rather talented r...

Re: What Are You Listening To Right This Minute?

I've loved everything they've done. I first ran across them back in '04 when one of the old digital channels broadcast highlights from the previous year's Festival au Desert. Something about a telecaster with those lads makes a lot of sense.

Re: Monacor SP-310CX Coaxial Driver MLTL's

Right. It's useful that some of the simpler software out there can do it too though; they're often a little more capable than people realise. Attached is a very quick & dirty overlay comparison in WinISD assuming the Seas A26 used in the WD25 series. Yellow is a Butterworth (Qtc = 0.707) aligned sea...

Re: Monacor SP-310CX Coaxial Driver MLTL's

Most decent box modelling s/w can do aperiodic, or at least get as near-as-makes-no difference. Best way of doing it for a basic aperiodic is to model as a vented box in something like WinISD, reduce the vent size down to a very small area & whatever notional tuning frequency with that that gives yo...

Re: Monacor SP-310CX Coaxial Driver MLTL's

a poser for Scott, maybe Would it be possible to sim this driver in a W25t or possibly an A25/35 or similar, and what would you use..... I have some notes from the middle of last year and I couldn't get this driver any lower than 120hz in a reflex box, and closed it came out at less than 20 ltrs, n...

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Aye, except you did it properly, Ed. I don't quite know what Nigel is using his for, but presumably it isn't going to be home audio in the sense that any of us would, since his are regular W bins with the driver mounted internally, so the HF & a good portion of the upper mids are going to be AWOL. O...

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Lagging a sealed box is quite normal. I'd expect 2in rockwool to drop system Q by about 5% depending on specific type & density. Possibly a bit conservative there.

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Speaking purely in the abstract, Fane state Qts = 0.64 on the data sheet assuming a voltage source amplifier & no series R in the circuit. Using the Qe & Qm values it looks like it comes out a touch higher, around 0.658 80 litres undamped = system Q (Qtc) of roughly 0.91 (with light damping that dro...
